Rehearsals are critical to New Wave's performance quality and sound. We meet every week during the season to learn our material and polish our performance until it's perfect for our audiences.
Dates, Time and Location. Rehearsals are Tuesday nights from 7 – 9:30 pm at Govans Presbyterian Church (5828 York Road, Baltimore, MD 21212) in Sharp Hall. Sharp Hall is behind the church: follow the driveway past the playground and park in the large lot. Look for the entrance in the corner of the building at the top of the stairs/handicapped ramp. Sectionals and dress rehearsals will be scheduled as needed and announced in advance.
Attendance. Attendance is required at all rehearsals, especially the last few before a performance, and members must attend at least two sectionals per semester. Notify your section leader as soon as possible if you need to miss a rehearsal. Any member who misses three or more rehearsals in a semester will need to sing for the Artistic Director to prove their knowledge of our repertoire. Members who are not prepared will not be allowed to perform.
Etiquette. Members are expected to be prompt, prepared and attentive during rehearsal. Be on time, with your music and a pencil. Bottled water is advisable, as the air in Sharp Hall can be dry. You may also find it helpful to bring a small recording device. Some people use their phones for this purpose, but ringers should be silenced at all times. If you need to answer a call or send a text during rehearsal, please take it outside.
Memorization. Depending on the repertoire for the semester, the Artistic Director may require that music be memorized for performances. Knowing music by heart lets us connect better with our audience, and helps the message of our music shine through. Be prepared and start memorizing your music from the very start of rehearsals. It will help you in the long run, we promise! Tips and techniques for memorizing music will be shared throughout the semester.
